Whether you're purchasing a vessel, renewing insurance coverage, securing financing, or assessing the condition of a boat you already own, a professional marine survey provides critical information that helps you make informed decisions. A marine survey is a comprehensive evaluation of a vessel's structural integrity, systems, safety equipment, and overall condition. Depending on the type of survey being performed, the inspection may include the hull, deck, electrical systems, propulsion equipment, fuel systems, steering components, onboard machinery, and visible safety-related equipment. For buyers, a survey can reveal deficiencies that may not be apparent during a casual inspection, potentially saving thousands of dollars in unexpected repairs. For owners, insurers, and lenders, a survey provides an independent assessment of the vessel's condition and value.
At SS Marine Surveying, every survey is performed with a practical understanding of how vessels are actually used, operated, and maintained. With more than two decades of hands-on marine experience, I combine technical expertise with real-world boating knowledge to deliver thorough, objective evaluations. My credentials include designation as a SAMS® Surveyor Associate, licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) and United States Coast Guard OUPV, and certification as an American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) Advisor. This unique combination of engineering expertise, marine surveying training, and operational boating experience allows me to provide clients with detailed reports that are both technically sound and easy to understand, helping them make confident decisions regarding their vessel investment.

With more than two decades of hands-on boating experience, I understand the systems, structures, and maintenance challenges commonly encountered in recreational vessels. Every survey is conducted with attention to detail and documented through comprehensive reporting and photographs to help clients make informed decisions.
As an independent marine surveyor, my objective is to provide accurate, unbiased information regarding a vessel's condition. Regardless of the size of the vessel, I strive to deliver professional service, clear communication, and reports that are useful to buyers, owners, lenders, and insurance underwriters.

A marine survey is a comprehensive visual and operational inspection of a vessel's condition, systems, and overall seaworthiness. The goal is to identify deficiencies, safety concerns, evidence of damage, deferred maintenance, and conditions that may affect the vessel's value or insurability.
During a typical pre-purchase or condition and valuation survey, the following areas are inspected:
The hull, deck, transom, stringers, bulkheads, and other accessible structural components are examined for signs of damage, repairs, distortion, cracking, moisture intrusion, delamination, or excessive wear. Particular attention is given to areas that commonly experience stress or water intrusion.
Deck surfaces, hatches, railings, cleats, windlasses, ladders, and other installed hardware are inspected for security, condition, and signs of deterioration. Evidence of leaking deck penetrations or compromised mounting locations may also be noted.

Accessible AC and DC electrical systems are evaluated for general condition, installation quality, and compliance with recognized marine industry practices. Batteries, battery installations, wiring, circuit protection, shore power connections, and electrical panels are examined where accessible.
Fuel tanks, fuel lines, filters, fittings, and associated components are inspected for leaks, corrosion, deterioration, or installation concerns. The condition of accessible fuel system components is documented as part of the survey.
Steering systems, controls, engine installations, propulsion components, and associated mechanical equipment are visually inspected for condition, operation, and signs of excessive wear or damage. The survey includes observations of accessible machinery spaces and mechanical installations.

Freshwater, raw water, bilge, sanitation, and drainage systems are inspected where accessible. Pumps, hoses, fittings, and associated equipment are evaluated for general condition and functionality.
The vessel's safety equipment is reviewed, including fire extinguishers, navigation lights, visual distress signals, life jackets, carbon monoxide detectors, and other safety-related items as applicable. Recommendations may be provided for missing, expired, or deficient equipment.

Marine surveying is strengthened by practical boating experience. With decades of experience operating vessels throughout Brevard County, including Port Canaveral, the Banana River, Indian River Lagoon, and the Intracoastal Waterway, I bring real-world operating knowledge to every survey.
